Brazil, Day 1: São Paulo - Thammy & Sandro

We landed in São Paulo at about 10:30 on Saturday. Our bags were pretty much the last ones to come off the plane and after a bit we made it through customs.

We had some celebratory Pão de Quijo and Cashew juice and stretched our legs.

After a small mix up on times, our friend Sandro picked us up at about 1:30 and we headed directly to the birthday party of a 1-year-old girl of a family from Sandro and Thammy's church.

The party was on the outskirts of Guarulhos, a suburb of São Paulo. Caroline was impressed with the F1+Stunt Driving skills of Brazilian drivers and was happy when we arrived safely at the party. The party was in an in-development (slightly sketchy) area but when we walked through the door to the party place it was like a mini paradise.

There was a pool, fountains, a koi pond, a soccer field, and BBQ area, as well as kids stuff like a ball pit, trampoline and bounce house. It was a very nice party for a 1-year-old!

We left the party at 5 or 6, squeezed the 6 of us (us plus Sandro, Thammy, 9 year old Bianca and 4 year old Breno) into Sandro and Thammy's car and cruised back to their house in São Paulo. All through the 30 minute drive home, Bianca taught Caroline some Portuguese and Caroline taught Bianca a few English words.  By the time we got there, the were fast friends!  After arriving, Caroline and Bianca started in on a rousing game of Brazilian Guess Who but the rules were that Caroline could only ask questions in Portuguese and Bianca could only ask in English :)  After we hung out and talked and played with the kids for a while, Michael and Sandro headed to the grocery store to get ingredients for us to make a big American pancake breakfast in the morning, while Caroline and Bianca and Thammy faced off on Just Dance on the xbox! At about 10:00 PM we had pizza!

Michael has really missed Brazilian pizza terribly! We had one with chicken with catupíri cheese and one with carne-seca (more or less sun-dried beef) and two other flavors. They were super delicious. We finally went to bed at about midnight.

Michael knew Thammy from when he was a missionary. She married Sandro some years later and now they have their wonderful kids, too.  It was really fun to get to know everyone better, and we are really grateful for their hospitality!
